Who was Jefferson Davis?
Jefferson Davis was the first and only president of the Confederate States of America. He was a planter, politician and solider. Jefferson was born on June 3rd, 1808 in Fairview, Kentucky.
Accomplishments
Jefferson Davis is best known for being the only president of the Confederacy, he held office from 1861 until the collapse of the confederacy at the end of the Civil War in 1865. Before the war, Davis held several spots in the federal government. While he held the Confederate government together in nearly impossible situations, he was considered a traitor by those loyal to the United States.
Family
In 1835, Jefferson married Sarah Knox Taylor, the daughter of Colonel Zachary Taylor. Taylor highly disapproved of the marriage. However when the couple moved to Mississippi, Sarah contracted malaria and died three months later. In 1845, Davis married his second wife, Varinia Howell. They remained married for the rest of their lives and together they had 6 children.
Death
Jefferson Davis died in 1889 due to complicated bronchial ailment in New Orleans. He died at the age of 81, on Friday, December 6th, 1889. His funeral was on the the largest in the South. He is currently resting in the Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia underneath a life size statue.
